He jumps down. We see another one. They’ve teamed up. We’re standing in the middle of monkey circle. No way I can keep my banana. There’s nothing to do, I need to give it up, donate it to Mother Nature.

Phone shows it’s 4.45am. I pass Haile’s bed, and pinch her toe. “It’s time!”.

.

Last days has been quite cloudy, sometimes bit rainy. But you can’t let those clouds fool yourself. If it rains, it doesn’t mean it’s not warm. Oh yes it is. Hot as hell.

Hiking in costa rica

.

There’s almost no traffic at this early hour. Only few cars, and bikers, here and there. It’s not dark anymore. Still little bit aphotic, but we actually can see where we’re going.

.

We sit down, and turn our faces in the direction of the sunrise. We wait to see how morning star raises.
Unfortunately there are still way too many clouds. Sunrise, even though it’s beautiful, is still not what we expected.

We walk to the bus station. It’s drizzling.

.

Danny, one of the owners of the hostel, suggested to visit Cahuita National Park. “This place is like walking in Alice wonderland”, she said.

.

I’m sitting here, on the bus. It really doesn’t matter whether you sit on the bus, or in the sauna. It feels hot, so super hot. I’m sweating like a road mender, who’s fixing asphalt.

.

As always, we’re not quite sure when we need to get out of the bus. We just keep our eyes open, and if we see a sign- Puerto Vargas, then it’s our stop.
The sign of Puerto Vargas appeared so quickly, that we, long minded peeps, couldn’t react at all, and the bus stops way after.

.

Fortunately it’s not a long walk. But you know, when it’s hot outside, even 500m feels like miles.

Cahuita National Park

.

Cahuita National Park lying on Costa Rica’s stunningly beautiful Caribbean coast, and facing the Atlantic Ocean. It’s small, but beautiful.

.

White sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise water, coral reefs, costal jungle full of wildlife – no doubt it’s one of the most amazing national parks in the country. And most probably, that’s why it’s most visited as well.

The hike

.

We walk along the forest trail. Languid palm trees giving us a little bit of shade.
Lizards are rustling between the leaves, and birds are singing beautifully. Maybe those are toucans? They said you can find them in here.

.

It’s pretty as a picture, when we walk out of the forest. Like watching a postcard. Slender palm trees swaying over the ocean. Luscious green jungle. I feel warm and humid wind, that send us during the entire walk.

I walk around. Looking all those crabs, that quickly run away, when they feel me coming closer. A yellow head lizard bask in the sunshine.

.

I smile.

.

It feels good. It feels right.

We find a nice place to dine. Wraps, filled with, good old, beans and avocado.
“Hey, look, there’s a raccoon.”

.

I have a banana in my hand, and it’s wrapped in a plastic bag. I’m going to ask Haile to put this on my bag. I get distracted, when a little, cute monkey appears unexpectedly.

.

He jumps down. We can see another one, and another. AND ANOTHER. Not very high, on the threes, there are quite a few, watching down on us.

.

One of the monkey comes toward me. He comes dangerously fast. I’m trying to pass him. I fail. He just stands and stares.

.

We realize that the monkey covets my banana. All the monkeys have teamed up, and now we’re standing in the middle of the monkey circle. No way I can keep my banana. Theres nothing to do, and I need to give it up, and donate it to Mother Nature.

.

And then he comes. Quickly.

what to do in costa rica

“Wait dude! I AM GOING to give you my banana, let me just take it off the plastic bag.”
.

I’m having hard times taking the banana out. The monkey is half-step away from me, and he is so ready to jump after it – I can see it on his eyes.

.

“Oh my God, oh my God. WHAT SHOULD I DO?”

.

“Give her the god damn banana!”, Haile shouts.

.

Banana is flying out of the bag. Finally. Monkey is delighted, I am scared.

If they haven’t fallen down of the three, they’re still going after bananas, what aren’t theirs.

MORE INFORMATION

.

What: Cahuita National Park

Where: [map]

How much: 2800CRC ($5.07)

How to get there: if staying in Puerto Viejo, take a bus (710CRS – $1.27) to Cahuita or Puerto Vargas.

The hike: the whole trail is about 5.6m, and it’s rather easy. The weather is mostly hot and humid, bring a plenty of water with you. The hike is doable with flip-flops, but it’s way comfortable with sneakers. I also recommend to bring food to have a picnic, and swimsuit.

Good to know: keep your eyes open, you may see plenty of animals, and birds while walking in the park – lizards to snakes, monkeys to sloths.
PS! Be careful with monkeys, you don’t want to loose your banana.
